Portugal Edge Past Ireland 1–0 in Tight World Cup 2026 Qualifier

Portugal secured a narrow but vital 1–0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Lisbon on Sunday night, keeping their perfect start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign intact. A second-half strike from Bruno Fernandes proved the difference in a match where Ireland showed remarkable defensive organisation but ultimately lacked cutting edge in attack.

The game began with Portugal asserting their usual dominance in possession, as Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, and Bernardo Silva all combined fluidly in the final third. However, Ireland’s back line—anchored by Nathan Collins and John Egan—held firm, frustrating the hosts and forcing them into long-range efforts throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Ronaldo, playing in his 211th international match, came close to giving Portugal the lead midway through the first half with a curling free kick that grazed the crossbar. Ireland responded through a rare counterattack, as Chiedozie Ogbene tested Diogo Costa from distance, but the Portuguese keeper comfortably gathered.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute when Fernandes struck from the edge of the box after a neat one-two with Silva. His low drive found the bottom corner past Gavin Bazunu, who had been outstanding throughout the contest.

Ireland pushed forward in the closing stages, introducing Evan Ferguson in an attempt to find an equaliser. The Brighton striker provided energy and aerial threat, but Portugal’s experienced defence—led by Rúben Dias and Pepe—held their ground.

In stoppage time, Ronaldo nearly doubled the lead after rounding Bazunu, but his effort was cleared off the line by Seamus Coleman in a moment that summed up Ireland’s fighting spirit.

The win leaves Portugal top of their qualifying group with maximum points, continuing Roberto Martínez’s strong start as manager. For Ireland, it was another night of what-ifs: disciplined defending but missed chances and a lack of composure in key moments.

Fernandes, named Man of the Match, praised Ireland’s resilience:

“They made it difficult for us all game. We had to stay patient, move the ball quickly, and finally we got our reward. Every win in qualifying matters.”

Stephen Kenny’s side, though disappointed, can take heart from their performance against one of Europe’s elite. As they return to Dublin, their focus will turn to their next home fixture—where points are essential if they hope to keep their World Cup dream alive.

Portugal march on, but Ireland’s spirited display showed they won’t go down without a fight in the race for North America 2026.
