Chris Eubank Jr opens up about serious health issues — a major blow for his boxing future

Chris Eubank Jr — one of Britain’s most high-profile and polarising boxers — has publicly revealed that he has been grappling with “a lot of health issues” over the past year, casting doubt over when, or even if, he will return to the ring.

What he’s said

In a statement posted on social media, Eubank Jr said:

“I’ve been dealing with a lot of health issues over the last year & yeah it all finally caught up to me last month.”

He added: “I will not box again until I’m back to 100% and I don’t know when that will be,” signalling that whatever he’s dealing with now is serious enough to pause his career.

The revelation comes after his lacklustre performance in the recent rematch with Conor Benn, where he was knocked down twice and looked far from his usual self.

What might have triggered it — and how serious it could be

While Eubank Jr has not disclosed a precise diagnosis, there are several contextual clues that observers believe may have contributed:

His dramatic attempt to make middleweight for the Benn fights this year involved an extreme weight-cut and dehydration — conditions that often stress the body significantly.

After his April 2025 win over Benn, he spent two nights in hospital — initially described as a precaution — and later revealed he required surgery after a head-butt in the fight that opened a wound above his eye.

Promoters and insiders have described him during the rematch as “a shell” of his former self, with a significant drop in punch output and overall performance — suggesting the health issues were impacting his ability to fight at full capacity.

All of which lends credence to the idea that the health problems are more than a temporary setback.

What this means for his career — and the wider sport

Eubank Jr is now refusing to fight until he is “100%” — an indefinite break.

According to his promoter Ben Shalom, there is hope for a comeback in mid-2026 — but only if Eubank Jr recovers fully.

For fans of the longstanding rivalry between Eubank Jr and Benn — a saga more than 30 years in the making — this pause casts doubt on the possibility of a trilogy fight anytime soon.

More broadly, the episode raises uncomfortable questions about the physical toll of extreme weight cuts, rehydration clauses, and the demands placed on boxers — and whether some fights are pushing athletes beyond safe limits.

Why the revelation matters

Eubank Jr has been a fixture in British boxing for more than a decade, known not only for his fighting style but also his flamboyant personality, family legacy, and headline-drawing rivalries. That someone in his position is forced into a hiatus due to health concerns could resonate widely among fans and fighters alike. It is a stark reminder that behind the spectacle — the hype, belts and bravado — lies a human being whose body carries serious risk.

Moreover, by speaking openly about his struggles — even if in vague terms — Eubank Jr might be setting a precedent. If more fighters feel compelled to prioritise long-term health over immediate bouts, the sport may gradually shift toward more cautious practices.
