Manchester United in Transition: Solskjær Rumoured as Managerial Option After Amorim Exit

Manchester United find themselves once again at a managerial crossroads following the surprise departure of head coach Rúben Amorim in early January 2026. The Portuguese coach was dismissed after just fourteen months in charge amid internal tensions and a run of inconsistent results, leaving the club searching for stability and leadership as the season unfolds.

Solskjær in the Frame, but on Interim Terms

Among the names being discussed to take the reins at Old Trafford, former United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjær has emerged as one of the leading contenders to return, at least in a caretaker capacity until the end of the season. Solskjær, who previously managed the club between 2018 and 2021 and enjoyed respectable league finishes and a Europa League final, is reportedly open to discussions about coming back to the club.

Sources suggest that Manchester United have held early-stage talks with Solskjær — alongside other former players such as Michael Carrick — about stepping in as interim manager to steady the ship while a long-term appointment is considered.

No 5-Year Contract Confirmed

Despite some fan speculation and rumours on social media, there is no credible report confirming that Solskjær has signed a five-year contract, nor that he has been appointed as a long-term permanent manager replacing Zinédine Zidane — this appears to be unfounded at this stage.

Zidane himself has not been connected with the United job in any official capacity in the latest round of news, and recent reports focus on Solskjær’s potential short-term return rather than a long-term deal.

Why Solskjær Is in the Discussion

Solskjær’s connection to United’s heritage and his status as a club legend — notably scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final — make him a popular candidate among fans for any managerial role. His previous managerial tenure saw mixed fortunes but did include moments of promise during his early period at the club.

That said, the club’s hierarchy is taking a careful approach: Solskjær is currently only a contender for an interim return, and there’s no verified contract announcement on the long-term future of the United managerial role.

What Happens Next

For now, United have installed Darren Fletcher as interim manager for upcoming fixtures while the club continues its search. The board are expected to evaluate candidates over the next weeks, with a view to appointing a permanent manager in the offseason, potentially from a wide list of domestic and international options.
